Rio Linda / Elverta Community Water District Board of Directors Passes RESOLUTION 2007-05 Declaring a Water Shortage Emergency and Limiting New Connections

At a Special Board Meeting, held September 10, 2007, the RLECWD Board of Directors approved Resolution 2007-05, declaring a District-wide Water Shortage Emergency.  While the District believes it can meet fall, winter and spring demands, this past summer (while relatively mild) resulted in demands that caused system pressures to drop below the minimum mandated by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).  No Health or safety related issues resulted from the low pressure.  However, the District is working with CDPH on a plan to increase system capacity to a level compliant with state law and best engineering practices.

The District was forced to shut down two production wells in 2006 due to a new, lower Federal standard for Arsenic in public drinking water, (10 micrograms/liter).  The District is currently designing and constructing a new well, in addition to considering other system modifications and/or additions to replace this production capacity.  Unfortunately, capital improvements to increase system supply will not likely be in operation before 2008 summer season.  Therefore the District is asking consumers to voluntarily save water, and warning them that mandatory reductions may be required before the capacity shortage is fully mitigated.
